Kishu, A Handsome, Brave And Docile Dog

Originally from China and residing in Japan, this breed has a history of over 3,000 years. This dog was used as a wild boar hunter for his great courage. Let’s meet kishu inu

origin and history

This is one  of the oldest races we know.  They have been known for at least 3,000 years. They are believed to have come from Japan to China  when human migrations began.

The breed began to develop in the Kishu mountain region, hence its name. He was used as a hunting dog dog for wild boar, deer and large animals. This work denotes the courageous character of this breed. After all, the wild boar is a wild animal and it can kill a human being with a single attack.

There are paintings and writings showing that these dogs had varied colors in the beginning of this breed, such as red, sesame and brindle. However, since 1934, only copies with a single color are accepted with a pedigree.

It was in the same year of 1934 that the kishu was declared  a national natural monument  and officially adopted the name of the region from which it came. However, this did not prevent the  near annihilation of the race in World War II. In fact, this was a problem that occurred with many other races.

Glad he managed to survive! It is a beautiful breed with an incredible coat. Although the number of specimens is stable enough to preserve it, this breed is not seen outside of Japan.  Therefore, if you want to see one, you may need to take a trip to Japan.

Kishu Inu Characteristics

It is a medium-sized dog that reaches between 43 and 55 centimeters. Females usually do not exceed 50 centimeters. The weight varies between 16 and 18 kilos.

Its head is prominent and rounded, with perfectly round honey-colored eyes. Its muzzle is narrow and long, and  its light expression gives it nobility and tenderness. Its ears are pointed and erect, with a wide base.

In Japan it is still used for hunting. Despite this, it is increasingly seen as a guard dog and as a pet. Because he has a hunting instinct, he is a very energetic and active dog. Therefore, he will need long walks and large doses of exercise.

He is courageous, persevering and alert. Despite being active, in family life they are calm, affectionate and happy. They are very playful, which delights children. Therefore, they create a very special connection with the little ones, for their docility, tolerance and protective instinct. They can get bored easily if they don’t have the company or the necessary exercise.  Thus, they may end up demonstrating destructive, noisy, and stressed behaviors.

Health and special care with the kishu inu

This breed has no common health problems, except those that can occur in old age. Among them is dysplasia. However,  the hair must be checked continuously, as it is the place that harbors bacteria and parasites. Also, you have to brush it daily to remove dead hairs and untangle others. The eyes and ears can have infections. Therefore, it is recommended to clean them daily with a little saline and gauze.

The animal will need long daily walks and a good deal of exercise. Also, this will make sure he doesn’t get bored. Also, this will prevent the animal from becoming destructive or stressed. As you can see, this dog is ideal to be a pet. Although it is difficult to find it outside of Japan, maybe one day you will be able to have such an animal in your home. So, what do you think?
