Dogfighting, A Heinous Crime Against Animals

Among the various forms of abuse suffered by animals, dogfights can be considered among the most perverse. They are held in places that mix clandestine bets, marginality and an organized show that attracts a good number of people and which, despite being considered a crime in much of the world, shows no signs of going backwards.

The issue of dogfighting has returned to the news in recent days, due to the celebration of the San Marcos National Fair, in Mexico, a  country that unfortunately is among the most mentioned when talking about animal abuse. Fortunately, in recent times they are trying to reverse this situation with various initiatives.

But everything seems to indicate that, since 2014, during the same period that this famous event takes place, which takes place in Aguascalientes, an international dogfighting tournament has been organized.

In this city, despite the crime of maltreatment being a crime, dogfights are very common,  both because of measuring strength between opponents and contemplating how dogs kill each other. Therefore, several people who defend the rights of animals denounce.

These meetings usually take place on vacant lots in the most conflicted areas of Aguascalientes and attract a large number of spectators, including minors. Invitations are simply made “by word of mouth” among the regular competitors.

Dogfighting, in addition to being a form of atrocious mistreatment of animals, is also big business for mob organizations. They even organize international tournaments, such as the one being denounced in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and which takes place in parallel with the San Marcos National Fair.

However, the fights are also organized on an, one might say, international level. Large sums of money are wagered there and behind it there is a mafia organization that carries out other illegal businesses related to, for example:

• prostitution
• drug trafficking
• child pornography

Therefore,  it is not at all strange that Aguascalientes is the ideal place to develop an international meeting with these characteristics. Furthermore, according to specialists, some legal gaps in Mexican legislation leave the way open for these illegal acts to take place.

Petition to End Dog Fights

Information about this international dogfighting convention began to be released through a petition on Change.org. On this site, local and state authorities are asked to:

• Investigate the case
• cancel your performance
• Punish organizers and participants

The invitation to this clandestine convention seems to be made through encrypted messages  and the participants come from all over the world. — mainly from the United States, Spain and Brazil. Filmmakers often use multiple websites to communicate with each other.

And despite the authorities claiming that they were unable to talk to the organizers to prevent it from taking place, the convention continues to be held parallel to the San Marcos Fair. They enjoy the distraction that this event generates, as a lot of local people and tourists visit it, in addition, one of the main attractions is the bullfight.

The sufferings to which dogs are subjected before, during and after a fight are atrocious and it is not the case to go into detail in this article. 

Suffice it to say that  the executioners who mistreat these innocent creatures in this way are considered criminals in much of the world,  but despite this, they continue to carry out their business, on a small and large scale, organizing this type of clandestine meeting.

It will be the subject of another article to analyze  what goes on in the minds of those human beings who find pleasure in witnessing or participating with their animals in this type of activity,  more or less legal and consented, whether it is dogs, roosters or bulls.
