Hovawart, An Active And Servile Dog

The Hovawart, an active and servile dog

The Hovawart, or “Hofwart”, as it is also known, is a German dog that lives up to its name, which means “guardian of the corral” and whose origins date back to the 13th century.

After its emergence, this breed had an important slope, which put them on the brink of extinction. The reason is said to have had to do with their confrontations with the wolves, who used to surround the farms and herds they tended.

Hovawart has an ancestry that comes from the Great Dane of Tibet, ancestor of all mountain dogs; like the São Bernardo, the Newfoundland and the Perineum Mountain Dog.

Cynophile KF Köning, a great scholar of this breed and responsible for the recovery from its temporary extinction, collected for his breeding some specimens of the breed in the surroundings of the Black Forest (Germany) and in remote areas of the Hartz, crossing with other breeds such as the Leonberger, the Newfoundland, the German Shepherd and the  Kuvasz, in order to rescue them and enjoy this magnificent breed.
