Skin disease in cats is very common and can be caused by parasites such as fleas or mites, fungus or bacterial infections, allergies, stress, injuries, or, more rarely, hormonal imbalances. Below we share some of the  skin diseases that are very common in cats.

Abscess

Abscess is a skin disease in cats, caused by a painful accumulation of pus from a bite or penetrating wound. A swelling forms, which is relieved over time and which may break and leak pus.

Most abscesses are related to fights between cats, it is common to find this accumulation of pus in the front legs or abdomen of felines. AND

m on some occasions they may appear near the tail, as it is common for cats to be bitten in this region when they are in contact with other animals.

The best way to prevent abscesses is to keep your cat indoors, protected and safe.

Ear mites

If your cat is tilting and moving his head frequently, scratching his ears, and has a dark brown waxy material in the additive canal, this could mean he has ear mites.

This condition causes restlessness and irritation, and if left untreated, it can lead to bacterial infection. The mites are treated with medicine in ear drops and additive channel cleaning.

Symptoms of this skin disease in cats cause restlessness, redness, inflamed skin, or other irritation. It can also be caused by rubber or plastic feeders.

The best way to prevent dermatitis is to keep cats away from areas where chemicals are used, and remember to feed your feline in glass, stainless steel or lead-free ceramic dishes.

Also known as black dots, they are usually found on the underside of the chin and on the edges of the lips. This condition can be associated with plastic or rubber drinking fountains.

In severe cases, anti-seborrheic shampoos or benzoyl peroxide gels are used to break down excess oil. Including fatty acid supplements such as Omega-3 or Omega-6 can be beneficial.

However, before using them in your pet’s diet, consult a veterinarian first.

Flea Allergic Dermatitis

It is characterized by grain-like bulges that form at the base of the tail, the top of the hind legs, or the inner thighs. The best way to  prevent this skin disease is by controlling your pet’s fleas.

Food allergy dermatitis

Some cats are very sensitive to certain ingredients or preservatives in food. This sensitivity can cause severe itching of the head, neck, back and eyelid swelling.

It is often complicated by hair loss and sores, due to constant and aggressive shaving. Treatment for this condition involves a diet to determine which ingredient the feline is reacting to.

Some veterinarians can give steroid injections to soothe inflammation and itching.

It is the damage to the skin that can be caused as a result of compulsive cleansing. It is also often caused by stress. Therefore, the treatment consists of minimizing the cat’s stress level.

To achieve this, a calm environment is created and redirects the cat’s nervous energy through the game. In difficult cases, veterinarians may recommend some anti-anxiety medications.

Skin disease known as ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection that is highly contagious to other animals and humans.

Symptoms cause red round patches that show hair loss in the middle of the wound. Ringworm requires veterinary treatment with antifungal drugs, thorough cleaning and sterilization of the house.

Cats with light coats and hairless breeds such as the Sphinx are very prone to sunburn and should be kept out of direct sunlight between 10 am and 12 pm to reduce the risk of burns and emergence of cancer, such as melanoma.

Dermatitis in the tail

Often the glands near the tail usually excrete oils that are excessive. The result is an oily brown waxy material.

This condition is commonly found in cats that have not been neutered. The treatment consists of sterilization and hygiene twice a day with an anti-seborrheic shampoo to break down excess oil.
